Bolton Castle in Wensleydale offers a wide range of exciting activities in Yorkshire. From family days out to educational trips and historic tours, visitors can explore a variety of sights, sounds, and smells that bring the castle to life, making for a truly memorable visit.
Bolton Castle, one of the country’s best-preserved medieval castles, was originally built as one of the finest and most luxurious homes in England. The castle has over 600 years of fascinating history and is still privately owned by Lord Bolton, a direct descendant of the original owner, Sir Richard le Scrope.
The castle was completed in 1399, with the licence to crenellate granted in 1379. The Scrope family gained prominence under Sir Henry le Scrope, who served as Chief Justice and fought in significant campaigns like the Battle of Crecy. Despite the family’s apparent wealth, the origins of their fortune remain somewhat mysterious. Richard le Scrope invested heavily in building Bolton Castle and purchasing the Isle of Man for his son.
The medieval gardens at Bolton Castle adhere to principles described by Albertus Magnus in 1260, emphasizing a variety of flowers that refresh the sight and evoke admiration. Sir Richard Scrope chose the castle’s site in 1379, overlooking the ancient Wensleydale forest, rich in game. By 1535, a fine walled park was noted by Leland, part of a series of deer parks, whose high walls still stand today.
Private tours of the medieval gardens are available for groups of up to 30 people. These tours are offered at an additional cost of £50.00 per group per day (plus admission) and last approximately one hour.
The castle, gardens, and shop are open daily from 10am to 5pm, and the tea room is open from 10am to 4pm, except on wedding dates listed below.
