Esk Valley Railway

Esk Valley Railway

About

Running from the heart of Middlesbrough to the historic seaside town of Whitby, the Esk Valley Railway offers one of Yorkshire’s most scenic and enjoyable rail journeys.

The line passes through the beautiful North York Moors National Park, serving 17 stations along the route and connecting rural communities with Middlesbrough and the coast. It provides a relaxed, environmentally friendly and stress-free way to explore the Esk Valley’s magnificent landscapes, characterful villages and wider North Yorkshire countryside.

Whether passengers are planning a day out in Whitby, a walk in the North York Moors, or a gentle journey through some of the region’s most picturesque scenery, the Esk Valley Railway makes travelling part of the experience.

The route is supported by the Esk Valley Railway Development Company, a not-for-profit Community Rail Partnership which promotes the line to both residents and visitors. Designated by the Department for Transport in 2005, the partnership continues to market the railway, distribute timetables, support local communities and campaign for improved services.

Planning a Journey

Tickets to any station on the Esk Valley Railway can be bought from anywhere on the National Rail network. Where stations are staffed or have a ticket vending machine, passengers should buy tickets before boarding. At other stations, tickets can be purchased from the conductor on the train.

Dogs and cycles travel free, although only two cycles can be carried per train and carriage is at the guard’s discretion.
