The History

Built after 1120 by Walter Espec, Helmsley Castle in North Yorkshire showcases a unique ringwork design on a limestone foundation, a deviation from the typical defensive structures of its era. The castle evolved through the de Ros family’s lineage, transitioning from wood to stone, fortifying its stature with a stone curtain wall and distinctive “D” shaped East Tower – a feature mistaken for a keep due to its impressive size. After enduring the War of the Roses and the English Civil War, the castle faced deliberate ruination. Today, English Heritage preserves the site, where visitors can still witness the formidable earthworks and explore the remnants of its storied past.

Interactive Exhibition

Engage with history at the interactive exhibition located in the Tudor mansion’s ground floor. With a collection ranging from Civil War ammunition to early dining artefacts, the exhibit provides insight into the life at the castle spanning social, domestic, and military spheres.
