Located in the North York Moors National Park, Helmsley Walled Garden offers vibrant borders, historic glasshouses, and picturesque apple orchards. Visitors can enjoy lunch, coffee, or homemade cake at The Vine House Café, all while taking in the stunning views beneath the imposing ruins of Helmsley Castle. The garden, established in 1759, has been a cherished destination in North Yorkshire for over 30 years.
Helmsley Walled Garden promotes wellbeing through nature and outdoor experiences. The garden is maintained entirely by volunteers guided by trained horticulturalists. These volunteers contribute to the garden’s beauty and gain a sense of achievement, regardless of their background or abilities.
Founded 30 years ago by Alison Ticehurst, Helmsley Walled Garden was designed as a community space, embracing the benefits of gardening for mental and physical health. Today, the garden remains a small, independent charity run by volunteer trustees and a dedicated staff team, focusing on therapeutic horticulture and community wellbeing.
Visitors can explore serene lawns, vibrant borders, and enjoy the heritage Yorkshire apple collection. The walled garden offers a comforting atmosphere with managed wild meadows and tranquil areas like the White Garden. Helmsley Castle adds a sense of history and stability, making it a perfect retreat.
