Set in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, Ingleborough Cave offers an unforgettable underground adventure for all the family.
Visitors can follow in the footsteps of early Victorian explorers on a spectacular journey 500 metres beneath Ingleborough, discovering sculpted passages, striking rock formations and one of the UK’s most impressive natural wonders.
The adventure begins before reaching the cave itself, with access via the beautiful Ingleborough Estate Nature Trail. This 1.3-mile woodland route leads from Clapham towards the imposing cave entrance, passing through classic Dales scenery and offering a memorable start to the experience.
First discovered in 1837, Ingleborough Cave was revealed after local landowner James Farrer arranged for natural calcite dams to be broken down, releasing trapped water and uncovering the remarkable passages beyond. Today, the cave is well lit and accessible for visitors looking to enjoy a safe and atmospheric underground journey.
The Ingleborough Estate Nature Trail is a highlight in its own right, leading through beautiful woodland and towards some of the Yorkshire Dales’ finest limestone scenery, including Trow Gill gorge, Gaping Gill pothole, limestone pavements, Norber Erratics and the summit of Ingleborough.
Families can also enjoy the Mimpish Squimbie Family Trail, where children can follow a map to find miniature homes belonging to mythical creatures hidden along the lakeside, rocks and trees.
Situated at the entrance to the trail, The Old Sawmill Café is housed in a listed building full of heritage and character. Visitors can enjoy great coffee, homemade tray bakes and a changing menu using seasonal, fresh and local ingredients.
For those looking to make a full day of it, Ingleborough Cave can be combined with a walk to the summit of Ingleborough, one of the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks. The route from the trail offers a classic overground and underground Yorkshire Dales adventure.
Ingleborough Cave is located above the picturesque village of Clapham, on the south side of Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales. It is accessible by both road and rail.
