Situated close to the urban city centre, Sheffield Botanical Gardens were opened in 1836 and now cover 19 acres on a south-west sloping site.
The Gardens are listed by English Heritage as a Grade II site of special historic and architectural interest.
Come and discover the Gardens within the Gardens as several winding paths take the visitor on an exploration through over 18 different garden areas based on geographical or botanical themes. Highlights of the site include the Grade II listed range of glass Pavilions, the imposing gatehouse entrance, a rare Bear Pit, the modest South Lodge (all three Grade II listed), a Victorian Curator’s House (now a café) and a fossil stump (which is around 310 million years old).
The Gardens provide interest and variety throughout the year, ranging from the traditionally laid out Victorian-style Rose Garden at one end of the scale to the Prairie-style area designed by Professor Hitchmough from the University of Sheffield, at the other.
Events and activities happen year round and there is a full education programme for all ages run from the Dorothy Fox Education Centre on site. Toilet facilities are available and Blue Badge parking is available at the top of the drive off the Thompson Road, S11 8RB entrance.
The Gardens are a mile and a half south west of the city centre.
• The main entrance is at the top of the Gardens on Clarkehouse Road S10 2LN.
• There is also an entrance at Thompson Road S11 8RB off Ecclesall Road.
• In the north-west corner at Botanical Road S11 8RP there is an entrance via a turnstile.
