About

Nestled along the captivating historic waterfront in Wakefield, the Hepworth stands as a beacon of artistic excellence. With its gaze fixed upon the tranquil expanse of the River Calder, this exquisite art gallery has garnered accolades aplenty since its grand unveiling in May 2011. Renowned architect David Chipperfield’s visionary prowess is etched into every corner of this remarkable establishment.

Paying homage to Wakefield’s own prodigious artist, Barbara Hepworth, whose creative eminence left an indelible mark on the 20th century, the gallery serves as a dynamic canvas for showcasing the crème de la crème of international modern and contemporary art. Step into a world of aesthetic wonder as you wander through halls bedecked with masterpieces and curated exhibitions that beckon the connoisseur in you.

Delve into the artistic psyche of Hepworth herself through dedicated galleries that unravel the intricate threads of her creative process. It’s not just an art gallery; it’s a journey through the mind and soul of a visionary artist.

But the Hepworth Wakefield is more than just a sanctuary for art enthusiasts; it’s a thriving hub that nurtures the very essence of artistic expression. Our vibrant fairs and markets, which grace the calendar year-round, provide a platform for artists and creators to flourish and share their craft with the world.

Awards adorn our learning program, designed to ignite the flames of inspiration within families, communities, and esteemed educational institutions. Art is not just observed here; it’s lived, breathed, and brought to life.

As you traverse the gallery’s hallowed halls, you’ll encounter the rich tapestry of Wakefield’s art collection. A treasure trove of modern British art awaits – a testament to the creative prowess that has flowed through this region. Works by luminaries such as Ben Nicholson, Patrick Heron, L.S. Lowry, and, of course, Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore grace our walls. The legacy doesn’t stop there; it seamlessly weaves into the present with offerings from contemporary titans like Frank Auerbach, Maggi Hambling, Anthea Hamilton, Martin Parr, and Eva Rothschild.

As if this artistic haven weren’t enough, the Hepworth Wakefield Garden, an expansive marvel conceived by the ingenious Tom Stuart-Smith, unfurls its beauty before you. A verdant oasis that invites reflection and contemplation, this sprawling free public garden, unveiled in 2019, complements the gallery experience, allowing nature and creativity to dance in harmonious synergy.

In the heart of Yorkshire, where history and innovation intertwine, the Hepworth Wakefield beckons. It’s not just an art gallery; it’s an odyssey of artistic discovery that pays homage to the past while embracing the future. Come, immerse yourself in the world of Hepworth, where every brushstroke, sculpture, and creation tells a story of boundless imagination.
