Nestled at the intersection of Livesey Street and Club Mill Road by the serene River Don, Wardsend Cemetery is not just a burial ground—it’s a tribute to history and a sanctuary for nature. Operating since 1857 as an extension of St. Phillips Church, this Sheffield gem uniquely marries heritage and biodiversity. A true testament to Sheffield’s history, it’s an idyllic spot for heritage tours, nature walks, and more.
Amongst its nearly 30,000 tombstones, each with its own untold story, Wardsend Cemetery blooms with natural beauty that supports an ecosystem of flora and fauna. The site’s ‘wild’ nature isn’t just a backdrop but a vital player in the narrative, contributing to the nation’s efforts towards nature recovery and biodiversity. For those interested in both the past and the natural world, the cemetery offers guided nature walks, remembrance services, outdoor performances on the grounds of the old chapel, and educational school visits.
Please note that Wardsend Cemetery boasts a delicate balance between heritage and nature. The Friends of Wardsend Cemetery clear vegetation where they feel necessary and where capacity allows. This means the ground is uneven and overgrown in many areas, so please stick to the main paths and wear sturdy footwear. Unfortunately, this means that the site is not suitable for those with mobility difficulties. We hope to find a solution to accessibility in the near future.
There are no toilet facilities on site.
Parking is somewhat limited, offering just three spaces directly in front of the cemetery. Additional parking is available along some stretches of Livesey Street. Please note that there are no toilet facilities on-site, so plan your visit accordingly.
Wardsend Cemetery is located at the bottom end of Livesey Street at the junction of Livesey Street and Club Mill Road which runs alongside the River Don. Livesey Street runs from Penistone Road at Owlerton Stadium past Hillsborough Fencing and Sheffield College on your right. After the college the road bends to the left behind the stadium and Mondolez (formerly Bassetts). Follow the road and cross the bridge and the cemetery is in front of you.
As a standing invitation to the curious and the reverent alike, Wardsend Cemetery Heritage Park is always open for visitors to wander through. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply someone looking for a peaceful day out in Sheffield, Wardsend Cemetery is a treasure trove of stories waiting to be discovered.
