Ghosts of Station Hall at National Railway Museum

About

The National Railway Museum in York will host a new Halloween ghost trail during October half term, created in collaboration with the York Ghost Merchants.

Running from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, Ghosts of Station Hall will challenge visitors to find 30 handcrafted York Ghosts hidden throughout the museum’s restored Station Hall.

Thirty York Ghosts Hidden Around Station Hall

The event marks the first collaboration between the National Railway Museum and the York Ghost Merchants, the Shambles-based makers known for their individually handcrafted and collectable ghost figures.

Thirty York Ghosts will be positioned in different locations around Station Hall. As families search for them, they will also be able to discover spooky railway stories drawing inspiration from the museum’s collection, Victorian rail travel and York’s long association with ghostly tales.

Station Hall provides a fitting backdrop for the trail, with its collection of historic railway vehicles, Victorian influences and atmospheric spaces forming part of the Halloween experience.

Free Halloween Activities at the National Railway Museum

Ghosts of Station Hall forms part of a wider programme of family-friendly activities taking place at the National Railway Museum during the school half-term holiday.

The accompanying Echoes on the Line programme will include short live storytelling sessions exploring railway-themed tales. Visitors can also take part in a self-led craft activity inspired by memory, travel, communication and 19th-century railway journeys, creating a small keepsake to take home.

Halloween at Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery

Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery will also introduce Halloween-themed activities during the half-term period. These will include a robot-car haunted train and a Halloween ultrasound activity.

Together, the activities provide several ways for families to explore railway history, engineering and storytelling during a Halloween visit to the museum.
