The Lightcliffe and District Local History Society welcomes anyone interested in local history to join their fascinating talks from September 2024 to March 2025. Whether you’re attending just one event or the whole season, all are welcome to explore local heritage through engaging presentations and discussions.

Event Highlights

Each meeting begins at 7.30pm and includes a variety of talks that delve into the history and mysteries of the local area. At 8.15pm, there will be a short interval for refreshments, allowing attendees to socialise and discuss the evening’s content.

Upcoming Talks

• 25th September 2024 – Coley Hall
  Join Bob Horne as he unravels the long history of one of the area’s oldest and most distinctive houses.
• 6th November 2024 – The Clifton Wood Murder of 1832
  Anna Best investigates the unsolved murder of 20-year-old Elizabeth Rayner, offering evidence to implicate possible killers.
• 4th December 2024 – X Marks the Spot: The Lightcliffe Hoard
  Maggie Bickerdike and Alan Greenwood explore the stories behind the 1829 find of gold and silver coins in the Lightcliffe area.
• 15th January 2025 – Survival of the Fittest
  John Brooke explains the harsh realities of life in the nineteenth century, with high infant mortality rates, disease, and workplace dangers.
• 5th March 2025 – St Matthew’s Church 150th Anniversary
  Ian Philp looks back at the history of the church’s building, the founding Fosters, and the highlights of church life through parish magazines.

Tickets and Membership

Tickets are available at the door for each event. Non-members can attend for £3 per meeting, while season membership is priced at £10 for the full programme. Membership provides great value for those attending multiple talks throughout the season.
