The Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing Festival is a unique annual event that celebrates the ancient tradition of rushbearing. Over the course of the weekend, the festival sees the progress of the Rushbearing procession around seven towns and villages, visiting many churches and local hostelries along the way. The focal point of the procession is the sixteen-foot-high, two-wheeled, handsomely decorated and thatched rushcart. Accompanying the procession are musicians, Morris dancers, and supporters in traditional attire, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere.

Exhibition Highlights

• Rushcart Procession: Experience the spectacle of the rushcart being pulled through various towns and villages, accompanied by a team of sixty local men dressed in traditional attire, along with musicians and dancers.
• Live Music & Entertainment: Enjoy performances from some of the region’s finest musicians and Morris dancing teams, providing entertainment for the crowds throughout the weekend.
• Community Celebrations: Visit local churches and hostelries along the procession route, each hosting their own events and activities in conjunction with the festival.
