Bolton Castle in North Yorkshire will open its gates for the 2026 season on Saturday 7 March, launching a vibrant programme of spring events. One of England’s best preserved medieval fortresses, the castle invites visitors to experience immersive living history, seasonal family activities and daily attractions within its historic walls.

The new season begins with a dynamic Living History weekend that explores life during the 15th century and the early Tudor period. Visitors can observe demonstrations that reveal how the castle functioned in times of war and peace, including domestic routines and siege preparations.
The event provides an engaging introduction to Tudor England and is included with standard admission.
Located just ten minutes from Leyburn, Bolton Castle has remained in the same family’s ownership for over 600 years. The historic stronghold retains visible evidence of its past and offers five floors to explore, including a dungeon.

The castle’s resident dragon, Alfreda, has misplaced her egg and young visitors are invited to help track it down. The activity combines outdoor exploration with educational elements, making it ideal for families during the school holidays.

This special Easter weekend explores the shared history of the castle and the nearby church. The Living History team presents the story of the Battle of Towton and Bolton Castle’s involvement in this significant conflict during the Wars of the Roses.

Set in 1461 following the Battle of Towton, this immersive event portrays the household of Lord Scrope during a turbulent period of English history. Visitors can explore the realities of medieval castle life during wartime.
The event presents a detailed look at castle operations while much of the garrison is engaged in northern campaigns.

A further opportunity to experience the popular Living History programme, this weekend once again explores medieval traditions and the Battle of Towton. Visitors can take part in interactive activities and attend the engaging Tudor tour.
