York Castle Museum invites visitors to enjoy a summer of history, nostalgia and family-friendly activities as two iconic eras come to life through a programme inspired by Victorian galas and the vibrant spirit of the 1960s.
Running throughout the summer, the programme celebrates the traditions of historic York Galas alongside the music, fashion and culture that defined the Swinging Sixties. With immersive experiences, themed displays, creative workshops and interactive activities, visitors of all ages can discover how summer leisure and entertainment have evolved across the centuries.
Inspired by the popular York Galas that took place between 1859 and the early twentieth century, the museum’s Victorian-themed programme brings the atmosphere of these historic summer festivals back to life. Visitors can step into the immersive ‘Last Stop Before Kirkgate’ experience, created by Novo Theatre, which recreates a nineteenth-century coaching inn and introduces characters preparing for the excitement of gala day.
Throughout Kirkgate, Britain’s oldest recreated Victorian street, seasonal flowers, bunting, enhanced soundscapes and atmospheric projections create the feeling of a bustling summer celebration. Visitors can meet costumed residents, explore historic shops based on real York businesses and discover stories inspired by the city’s Victorian past.
A new installation by Yorkshire artist Pippa Dyrlaga will transform the museum’s Green Room with intricate paper hot air balloons, celebrating the balloon rides that were a popular attraction at York’s historic galas. From 25 July and throughout August, visitors can also take part in paper craft workshops and contribute their own creations to the display.
The programme also looks back at the 1960s, a transformative decade for York. Inspired by the arrival of Beatlemania and the founding of the University of York, the museum will recreate the sights and sounds of the era through colourful displays, music, games and nostalgic objects from everyday life.
Visitors can explore memories of childhood through toys, fashion and household favourites while enjoying a soundtrack of classic songs that helped define the decade.
The Exercise Yard will host a variety of traditional outdoor games and activities throughout the summer holidays, providing opportunities for families and visitors of all ages to get involved. The main programme of events and activities will run from mid-July, with further details available from York Castle Museum.
Alongside the summer programme, visitors can discover the museum’s permanent galleries and exhibitions, including Secrets of Dress, which explores the history of fashion, and the historic York Castle Prison, offering insight into the building’s former role as a Debtor’s Prison.
With an annual ticket, visitors can return throughout the summer and beyond to experience changing displays, seasonal events and the museum’s popular festive installations later in the year.
