Pontefract Castle hosts The Big Castle Bird Watch on 24 and 25 January 2026, inviting families to get involved in the RSPB’s Big Garden Bird Watch. With friendly RSPB guides, bird-spotting activities and creative indoor crafts, it’s a fun and educational weekend for all ages.

This family-friendly event is a great opportunity to learn more about local wildlife with help from knowledgeable RSPB volunteers. Visitors can borrow binoculars, take part in the official count on Saturday, and continue bird spotting at home afterwards. Indoors, younger visitors can enjoy themed crafts whatever the weather.
This is a free event with no booking required.
The Big Castle Bird Watch runs across the castle grounds and Visitor Centre, offering both outdoor bird spotting and indoor craft activities. Families are welcome to explore at their own pace and join the official count if they wish.
Pontefract Castle provides accessible parking, accessible toilets, baby changing facilities, and welcomes assistance and guide dogs. The site is wheelchair accessible.
