Winter Lights Return to York City Centre

About

York’s Winter lights return from Thursday 13 November until 14 February, bringing a vibrant seasonal glow to the city centre throughout the winter months.

Illuminating York’s Historic Streets

The scheme, delivered by York BID in partnership with Make It York, features an extensive display of energy-efficient lighting across the city centre. The installation includes:

  • Approximately 175,000 LED lights
  • Coverage across more than 50 streets
  • Over 15 kilometres of illuminated displays

The Winter lights highlight some of York’s most recognisable locations, including St Helen’s Square and Duncombe Place, creating an inviting atmosphere for residents and visitors. The Shambles, one of the UK’s most iconic streets, is enhanced with illuminated wreaths and small Christmas trees to complement its historic character.

Festive Favourites and Family Highlights

Several popular features return as part of the Winter lights offering:

  • Giant illuminated Santa’s Postbox, where children can post letters to the North Pole.
  • The Tree of Light, supporting St Leonard’s Hospice, reinforcing the city’s commitment to local charities and community partnerships.
  • Snowy projection in St Helen’s Square, returning after positive feedback and adding an atmospheric focal point in the heart of the city centre.

Supporting York’s Seasonal Atmosphere

The Winter lights play a key role in enhancing York’s seasonal ambience, contributing to a welcoming environment for shoppers, visitors and those enjoying the city’s hospitality venues. The installations are designed to complement York’s heritage setting while encouraging footfall and extended visits throughout the winter period.

Inclusive and Welcoming Displays

In line with York’s commitment to inclusivity, the Winter lights incorporate multi-faith symbols that reflect the city’s diverse communities. The displays invite everyone to experience the season in York, reinforcing the message that the city centre is a welcoming space for all.
